"This project has made a significant impression on the entire jury. The uniqueness of Groene Mient appeals to the jury. The high quality of living achieved here through a Collective Private Commissioning (CPO) is unprecedented. Despite the diverse wishes of the 33 clients, a beautifully harmonious whole has emerged with a surprising and strong image. The perseverance and determination of both the collective of clients and the project team, who have worked together for years on the realization, deserve nothing but praise. The materialization and details are bold and at the same time meticulously executed. The decision not to create individual gardens with fences, but instead to have a collective outdoor space, leads to a non-Dutch spatial quality that surpasses the ubiquitous traditionalism with flair.
The houses are built with utmost sustainability, and the ambition with which this has been done greatly impresses the jury. Even though Groene Mient is not located in a central or busy area of the city, the project, in its own way, gives back a lot to The Hague and its residents. The manner in which the project was realized is a splendid example of "citizen initiative" from which both the municipality and future collective initiatives can learn immensely. For these reasons, and also for the completeness of the approach and the integrality of the final plan, the jury presents an honorable mention to this magnificent project."

Slinger The three building blocks proposed in the plan are tailored to their urban location. The Mient block on Mient Street, the Slinger block that accompanies the pedestrian route and serves as the connecting element to the more rear-located Noord block. By connecting the logical straight Mient and Noord blocks with an organically meandering shape, the residents were also united. After all, they had described their wishes for the new construction both in a concise and organic manner in a design quality plan for the architects.
Layout The Groene Mient site offered a unique opportunity to create a jointly shared garden according to current standards. The challenge was to orient the new buildings towards the inner garden in a way that would seamlessly connect all the homes without dividing the inner garden into multiple parts. Another important design consideration was to maximize the southern orientation of the new construction, taking into account the intended low energy consumption and the use of solar panels and collectors. By placing the central block somewhat diagonally on the site, directly south, an optimal layout was found that met all the prerequisites. This was contrary to the originally established layout in the zoning plan.
Urban The warm and natural appearance of rough wood and stone characterizes Groene Mient in the big city, an image that is also modern and urban. These materials, with consistent detailing, make Groene Mient architecturally coherent. However, each spot is unique and recognizable due to the differences in volume of each individual dwelling. The variations in volumes per dwelling are natural and arise from the differences between the residents, differences that would not have come together as naturally in a more standard project.
Vega Verde Vega Verde is Spanish for Groene Mient and the name of the type of slate used. By varying two natural facade materials with different textures and orientations, it appears as if parts have been cut out of a larger volume with a stone shell, revealing the warmer wood inside. This gives the impression of a fourth dimension added—a dimension of time taken by the residents to carve out their own space from the larger whole. A process that will continue in the coming decades with new additions and extensions. Thus, the architecture represents a socially cohesive community that has shaped the raw block of Vega Verde, and with it, a part of the city, to its own liking.
